three projects | one community Campaign

DNDA is currently working on three building projects that each combine affordable housing and community facilities that range from a new home for the West Seattle Food Bank to a Cultural Arts Center in the historic Cooper School Building. This ambitious undertaking is the largest community campaign ever in West Seattle.

Croft Place Townhomes - In the summer of 2001, in fear of what private sector development would do to this six acres of wooded hillside on Delridge Way, DNDA secured this property and partnered with the Seattle Parks Department to permanently preserve three acres in open space. Croft Place clusters 21 new townhomes on the remaining three acres to preserve more open space and create a sense of community for the residents. Earth-friendly building practices, solar energy and a community building for resident use make Croft a great place to live. Twenty-one families moved in in August, 2005.

Historic Cooper School/ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center - Built in 1917, the Old Cooper School was boarded up in 1989 when the Seattle School District no longer had a use for the building. During the Delridge Neighborhood Planning process, the community envisioned the building as a new center for arts and culture. DNDA took the charge and after 16 dormant years, the building is undergoing an historic renovation to preserve its character with 36 live/work studios for low income artists and an 18,000 square foot Arts and Cultural Center focusing on young people and the many cultures of Delridge.

West Seattle Community Resource Center - The West Seattle Food Bank needed a permanent home that better enables them to eliminate hunger in our community and approached DNDA in 2001 to collaborate on a project. The West Seattle Community Resource Center will include a 10,000 square foot social service center owned by the West Seattle Food Bank. The Center will provide space for social service partners to provide what people need to move beyond poverty. On the upper floors, with views of the Olympic Mountains and surrounding a private courtyard, DNDA will own 34 apartments for low income families. The building will be completed in 2006.
